Paint or Stain Your Fence: What Should You Do?

If you have installed a new fence or want to repair your old fence, you should be considering whether you should paint or stain your fence. While both painting and staining help in protecting your fence from rot, bugs, and harsh weather conditions, the one you select depends on your requirements or weather conditions in your area.

Read on to find out whether you should paint or stain your fence.

Painting Your Fence

One of the major advantages of painting the fence is that you can choose different colors and a variety of finishes such as flat, sheen, and metallic. It takes around 8 hours for the paint to completely dry. Painting your fence is less expensive. However, it requires a lot of maintenance, and you may be required to repaint your fence more often depending on the weather conditions and quality of the paint used.

As paint tends to crack, peel, and bubble, you need to scrape off the existing paint and prepare the surface for the new paint.

Staining Your Fence

Staining the fence is easier as it does not require primer and layers of stain for an even look. It takes around 2 days for the stain to completely dry. The stain selection can vary from clear to opaque to a hint of color. The initial cost of staining may be higher. However, it requires less maintenance, and you don’t need to re-stain more often.

As stain does not crack or peel, it requires less preparation while re-staining. You just need to wash your fence before re-staining, without scraping or peeling.

Which One to Choose?

Choosing between paint and stain is a matter of preference. Some people prefer paint over stain while others favor stain. Consider the time, cost, and effort involved in each option before selecting the one that best complements the style of your property. Also, take into account the weather conditions of your region before choosing the right option.
