9 Practices That Help Keep Your Fence in Good Shape

Fences in general are quite beneficial. Some homeowners use them as privacy options, while others use them to keep their kids or their animals safe. Some people even use fences as a way of creating an outdoor personality for their home - an attractive, yet cost efficient way to beautify their home.

Here are 9 practices that help keep your fence in good shape:

Wrought Iron

    1. Rust: If you see any rust, you can remove it with a fine wire brush.

    2. Oil Based Primer: An oil based primer specifically for wrought iron is a great way to keep your fence looking new and shiny.

    3. Soap and Hot Water: Every 6 months you need to wash your fence down with some dish soap and hot water. Be sure to get in between all the nooks and crannies to remove all of the dirt, dust, and pollen.

Iron Fence

    1. Rust: To remove rust from an iron fence, use a handheld rotary tool with a stainless steel or abrasive brush.

    2. Debris and Dirt: Removing dirt from an iron fence is quite easy. Use a damp cloth with mineral spirits and wipe the fence thoroughly to remove any debris from it.

    3. Painting: If you are looking to brighten an iron fence, you can also use a metal paint. Two coats should do, especially if it’s a thin coat. Be sure to also use a metal primer.

Chain-link Fence

  1. Powerful Cleaning: If you really want to clean your chain link fence, try using a power washer.

  2. Rust: If your chain link fence has become rusty, try using a rust inhibiting agent as well as a metal primer. This should be done at least one time a year.

  3. Regular Cleaning: If you don’t have a power washer, you can use a stiff bristle brush. Use liquid and warm water to scrub the fence down.
